Client Challenge

Serving two million students and 30,000 teachers in Ontario and in Canada, Groupe Média TFO is a public educational media enterprise that has become an essential destination for audiences seeking innovative educational and cultural content in French. 

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Groupe Média TFO used an online platform, IDÉLLO, to bring teachers, ECE’s, students, and parents an array of educational video resources to support a new generation of learning. However, as pandemic restrictions increased the need for at-home learning tools, the Government of Ontario approached TFO to create a resource that would provide additional support to parents as students transition to learning outside of the classroom.

Based on this context, Groupe Média TFO approached Clearbridge Mobile to create a mobile product that would not only complement the IDÉLLO Learning Platform but ultimately create a new IDÉLLO experience to contribute to the continuity of learning at home, specifically for families. To reach a larger audience, increase user engagement, and establish IDÉLLO as an essential learning tool, there were several requisites we met. These included:

  • An experienced vendor with a proven track record of meeting tight time-to-market constraints as the Government of Ontario required a finished product within an eight-week timeframe
  • A vendor with expertise in cross platform development for mobile and tablet devices on iOS, iPadOS, and Android operating systems
  • Ability to create a compelling video experience with video integration, caption and full screen video playback support
  • Expertise across an array of existing and emerging technologies, particularly in voice search
  • A dedicated process and team to create an enhanced user experience that empathizes with all user personas and not only educators
  • The ability to follow Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) guidelines required by the Government of Ontario

Our Solution

1.  Accelerate Time-To-Market with our Now, Next, and Later Model

Working closely with Groupe Média TFO, we designed and developed a minimum viable product (MVP), with a prioritized product roadmap set for phased delivery using our now, next, later model. This process enabled us to focus our resources on refining only the product’s core functionalities, which helped us accelerate our time-to-market and deliver a fully functional product on time while still allowing for future product growth.  

2. Utilize Our Design Thinking Approach To Empathize With, and Create a User Experience for All Key User Personas

Even though 90 percent of IDÉLLO content is made available through family accounts, the existing online experience was not optimized for that key user persona. They would interact with the same UI as an educator, despite having different needs. 

For the new mobile experience, we leveraged insights from our intensive Design Thinking sessions to identify improvement areas and recommend mobile best practices. These insights allowed us to provide an easy-to-use experience with an updated UI, simplified navigation, user onboarding, and intuitive user flows for individualized key personas, including families, students, teachers, and educators.

3. Leverage Our Voice Search Expertise

A major driver for Groupe Média TFO was to expand its platform to include a voice search component to work for mobile and other smart devices, to make video content discovery seamless. Leveraging our expertise in voice search technologies, we were able to leverage an existing search API to facilitate a faster, more robust search experience. This experience incorporates accurate voice search capabilities in French and English, and autocomplete and typo tolerance text search features.
